Chiropractic Manipulative Therapy

CHIROPRACTIC MANIPULATIVE THERAPY (CMT)

The technique that Chiropractic is most widely known for is joint manipulation or ‘adjustments.’ A chiropractic adjustment refers to a chiropractor applying manipulation to the vertebrae that have abnormal movement patterns or fail to function normally. This technique is usually accompanied by an audible release of gas (joint cavitation) that is caused by the release of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide, which releases joint pressure (a cavitation).  Please Chiropractic Medicinevisit http://www.spine-health.com/treatment/chiropractic for additional information on the research, safety, and effectiveness of Chiropractic manipulation.

Traditional chiropractic has been viewed as a complementary and alternative medicine health care profession and an approach to healing concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system. Typically chiropractors emphasize manual therapy including joint adjustment and manipulation with particular focus on joint dysfunction/subluxations. Currently, chiropractors practice in over 100 countries in all regions of the world, however chiropractors are most prevalent in North America, Australia and parts of Europe.

Modern Chiropractic is in the middle of a paradigm shift along with the rest of the Physical Medicine (Physical Therapy, Athletic Trainers, etc) community. This shift is moving away from a doctor-centered model where a treatment is applied based simply on the preferred method of the doctor (Example- Chiropractors = adjustments, Physical Therapy = stretching and ultrasound, Athletic Trainers = taping ankles and electric stim). The modern practitioner is more of a hybrid, utilizing the best diagnostic and treatment methods available from all fields. This type of practitioner blends science, research, and personal experience while keeping the patient’s needs and goals at the forefront of the treatment plan. At the Wissahickon Spine Center, we constantly strive to improve our ability to help people without maintaining a bias towards a particular method or profession. We believe that the best results will be achieved from integration and cooperation among all types of health care providers.
